i set it up right away and used it to hem 3 pair of pants, I wanted to take to older adult camp the next week. It was very easy to use and light weight enough for me to move it to my dinning room table.easy quite sewing. I'm very happy with it, glad I chose it over all the others.
My first sewing machine lasted over thirty years without any problems never. My second electronic machine is now in repairs after less than three years. I ordered this simple mechanical machine without any bells and whistles and am glad I did. It works quite well, stitches evenly without problems. It makes basic buttonholes simple and easy. I will never buy another electronic machine again, there too many things to go wrong. Yes the machine is a very sturdy plastic and not too heavy. It meets all my sewing needs and I am glad I purchased it. I will update this review later to let it be known how the machine does over more time. This one thing I have t say is that more modern is not always better, sometimes old is better.
Again, I want to say that the ease of making simple button holes with just simple turns of the dial is a great feature on this machine. On my electronic model-in the repair shop making buttonholes was a finicky many stepped operation that did not always produce a good buttonhole. I suspect that someone might buy this machine for this feature alone, even if they have an electronic machine.
When I ordered this, it had been 20 years since I sewed anything. I took sewing in high school so I knew the basics. My last machine, a $100 Brother purchased late 1980's, lasted only 6 years so I knew I didn't want another Brother and I'd read where Janome makes good machines. And after using this one, I agree.
Points I'd like to make about this machine:
► Made in Thailand.
► Machine sounds like it has a good solid motor. Doesn't sound like it's straining.
► Right out of the box, it sews perfectly with no need to adjust tension, etc.
► The needle plate has several seam allowance guides in fractions and millimeters stamped into it so you can easily follow the appropriate seam allowance for whatever you are making.
► Very easy to thread, even though there is no auto needle threader; I had no trouble even though I *should* be wearing bifocals for close-up work.
► Easily adapts from sewing 2-3 thicknesses of light/medium denim to silky polyester without changing tension or needle.
► Front (sideways) loading bobbin, accessed after removing what Janome calls and "extension table" (the part that's removed to make it a free-arm machine.)
► Small "tool" kit included which has a zipper foot, sliding buttonhole foot, blind hem foot, 3 bobbins, a set of needles, seam ripper, and a screwdriver. A dust cover is also provided but it's more on the line of a what a cheap plastic shower curtain is made of, with a slit cut in the top for the handle to poke through. This machine requires oiling and you will have to provide your own oil.
► What I don't like: The foot pedal is made of plastic, not metal like my older machine, and even though there is some rubber on the bottom to prevent sliding on the floor, it is so lightweight it's easy to kick accidentally (I would have given this machine 5 stars if not for the flimsy plastic foot pedal).
I'm a casual sewer; usually I do mending or make something simple like curtains or hemming things by machine
I purchased the machine a week ago for my church's mission quilting group. We wanted a basic, mechanical machine for piecing and zigzag. I've spent a week sewing a lot on the 2206, before I deliver to church. I am very happy with the quality of the machine, stitches, ease of threading (do need my powerful reading glasses when I get to the needle), and speed of stitching. The variety of stitches is great for a machine at this price. I was happy to see that when I sew fast, the machine does not dance across the table. Filling the bobbin is very easy and fast! The only negative (why I gave it 4 stars)-- I have discovered is that the machine is a little bit noisy, but I wouldn't let this discourage someone from buying it. This machine is a great buy for a beginner or seasoned sewer! I was very happy to receive the bonus package with lots of extra bobbins. The bonus package adds to the value of this deal. Highly recommend the Janome 2206. If you want an electronic Janome, I have the Janome Gem and love it. It's quiet and has a great variety of stitches and other features. Janome Gem is very light weight for taking to classes, but it's more costly than the Janome 2206. Excellent machine and great price!
I am very pleased with my recent purchase of Janome sewing machine! So easy to thread, no problem with filling the bobbin, like the various stitches. It's "my cup of tea" and I love it.
