Have this machine since 2012, paid $399. I oiled it yesterday & reread the manual. Use it for seams. Used infrequently. I want to deactivate the upper knife. wish me luck! This machine is on Amazon for $249 w/o the bonus pak..
This is my first serger, so I have no basis for comparison. Threading is challenging, but it is color-coded and very clear. I use it primarily for overlocking seams and doing a rolled edge, and it generally does a nice job on that. The issues I have, are that A.) the manual is only sort of helpful, and B.) the lower looper is constantly coming unthreaded. I had it tuned up, and for a little while it was good, but after a couple thread changes it started again. This could definitely be user error, but the manual sure isn't any help!
I love my Janome Serger. This model is perfect for someone like me that wants finished seams in a garment. The machine was easy to thread because it came pre-threaded with colored thread.
Just had the machine a few days, but I am already pleased with it. Threads as easily as any serger does and right out of the box it was tension perfect.
The manual could be more user friendly and that's why this machine isn't getting 5 stars. Luckily I am a serger veteran otherwise I would have been completely lost.
But as I said, the machine itself is exactly what a basic serger with differential feed should be!
