Singer Quantumlock 14T967DC FS 5/4/3/2-Thread Serger (4/5) Jun 15, 2008 Hilary Santos
I bought this serger, my first , for its combined coverstitch and overedge features. So far, since I have no previous serging experience, I am satisfied with the machine.

The pros for this machine are that it is very easy to thread if the instructions are followed carefully, and I am happy with the range of stitches it produces. Pricewise I don't think you can do better than this - especially with the additional presser feet.

I would have given it a 5 star rating if not for the following :-

1. The instruction manual needs drastic revision! It seems to assume prior knowledge of serging and should be re-written on the assumption that the reader is totally ignorant as I was.

I followed it faithfully up to the first stitch - double chain stitch -on page 39 and saw " driving clutch position C ". Nowhere on this page is the clutch mentioned again, nor is it included in the table of contents.

I finally, after much searching, located it in the diagrams of the machine parts at the beginning of the book and then found that there was an unlabelled diagram of the clutch on the next page, and that there were in fact instructions for the clutch but under the headings" Disengage upper looper" and "Re-engage upper looper".

These instructions did not however refer to the pictures at the side, which were not named as the clutch, just A and B, and in a box with 4 other diagrams.

There should be a detailed index at the back of the book and, since there is no video, including online links such as this would be helpful too- I found this by chance as I searched for Singer online help-

2. The tension adjustment levers do not seem to give very fine tuning - older machines had knobs that might have worked better. They look at if they would have had a bigger range of adjustment and the numbers on them would make it easier to reproduce a setting. I spend a lot of time adjusting, though this might also be due to my inexperience.

3. A query sent to Singer online help got a reply which did not answer any of the questions I asked.

4. 2 of the spool winder caps do not fit well and keep falling off.

5. The extra- high pressure foot lifter - the difference in height is negligible - about 1/2 a millimeter!
