great sewing machine! I bought both HD1000 and HD3000 to compare. HD1000 is much better than HD3000 for me, if you expect a reliable fast sewing machine that's kind of like JUKI industrial sewing machine (what i've been used to from school). the front loading bobbin system is no problem for me since I'm used to JUKI's side loading bobbin. and I actually find HD1000 much better at sewing light weight fabric like silk than HD3000. I didn't like the plastic parts in HD3000 and the threading feels strange. all the feet came with HD1000 is metal too, unlike some plastic feet in HD3000.
This machine is a true work horse, I make WWII reproductions (mainly Russian Ushanka hats) and it handles the job wonderfully, With what i've made with this machine it's already paid for it's self. The caps I attached in the image were made of faux fur, Vintage 100% wool, several layers of heavy cotton batting/canvas, and heavy cotton liner. At points I have to sew through almost half an inch of wool while hemming and it glides right through. I would like to get the HD3000 version one day but for now this thing just keeps on going like a champ. Bobbin system is very easy to use too.
This is a great machine. I purchased it a couple of weeks ago and have already hemmed pants and done some home dec stuff. Solid construction and easy to use. You won't be disappointed. I happen to know that this design of mechanical machine has been around for years. So that tells you something right there.
Been sewing on this machine for about a week now and I just love it. I'm an experienced sewer, and this is a no-frills, super sturdy, heavy duty machine. It does beautifully on thick stuff - multi-layers of denim, heavy cotton webbing - even light leather. It does a gorgeous, even satin stitch. My aging eyes love the needle threader, too!
The only downside I can see so far is that the needle position is fixed. That is to say, the needle stays in the center, you can't set it to the left or right like you can on most machines. Makes it a bit trickier to do edge-stitching, but it's not a big difficulty.
Other than that, it's a great machine and highly recommended.
After receiving this sewing machine, I immediately tried it out just in case I had to return it. It feels heavy enough and nothing moved or trembled during sewing. For threading I used the booklet since it's slightly different than my old machines, drawings are not the greatest but managed at first try. (I'm very experienced, for a beginner it might be more of a challenge)
Read up on how to set the stitches and off I went.......not bad at all, I kept folding the material to see how "thick" I could go. I kept my face afar expecting the needle to break or everything to "snag" up in a bunch ( usually both at the same time ). Things went very well , I even had a few flashbacks thinking I was using my Necchi from 1962 . (the best heavy duty ever) My main use will be for curtains, jeans etc. therefore I didn't want all the fancy stuff that I would never use anyway. Straight stitch ,zig-zag ,zippers, as long as the machine is heavy enough and I can sew thick material without thread and needle breaking constantly . For the price it's a great little machine and very sturdy on my dining table. Tomorrow, lining my rib cord curtains to insulate windows from the cold, I'm confident my machine will do just fine. I would have given 5 stars if machine went a little faster but at the same time I realize you can't have it all for 300 bucks.
